About Us

The Language Learning and Writing Center (LLWC) provides extracurricular language-learning resources for students, faculty, and staff at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU). Our mission is educational—we work with members of the NYCU community to help them learn the skills they need for clear and effective communication.

▪️  Consultations: Our tutors offer one-on-one consultations for students on their use of English in the university and beyond.

 

▪️  English Chat Hour: Every week, our tutors provide students, faculty, and staff with an informal setting to practice their English conversation skills.

 

▪️  Activities and workshops: We organize activities and workshops each semester to enhance the language and communication skills of the entire NYCU community.

 

▪️  Mini-courses We offer English writing courses for all members of the NYCU community

Jonathon Hricko, Director

Professor, Institute of Philosophy of Mind and Cognition, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU)

Jonathon has nearly a decade of experience teaching English writing courses at the university level. He has been teaching at NYCU since 2016, where he regularly offers courses in English writing as well as English-medium instruction (EMI) courses in philosophy.

Kang-yen Chiu, Deputy Director

Kang-yen specializes in the writings of Sir Walter Scott, hospitality and postcolonial theories. He is also an expert on the aesthetic thought of the English and Scottish Enlightenment. He has published in journals such as The Wenshan Review, The BARS Review and Scottish Literary Review. He is currently working on a monograph, Sir Walter Scott and China.

Project based Teacher of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU)

Grace has more than three years of experience teaching English at the university level in Taiwan. She started teaching at NYCU in 2025. Grace holds a BSc in biochemistry, a MSc in business, and a BA and a MPhil in art history. She is writing a PhD dissertation on Proust at King’s College London.

Part time tutor of Language Learning and Writing Center, Ph.D., Foreign Languages and Literatures, National Taiwan University (2014)

Chih-wei has taught English at the university level for 15 years to students of different age groups and from different countries. He has offered courses in listening comprehension, presentation skills, advanced reading, writing and English for specific purposes. He enjoys reading poetry and the philosophy of Martin Heidegger and Ludwig Wittgenstein. He started teaching at NYCU in 2022, where he shows students how to use online resources to learn English and self-study.

Szu Chia is a university lecturer with eight years of teaching experience and she had experience of working at the British Council as an IELTS clerical marker. Now she teaches at the English centers of Taipei TechnologyUniversity and Soochow University. She has an MSc TESOL degree from the University of Edinburgh.

Graduated from the private Tunghai University in Taichung with a master's degree in the English Teaching Group of the Department of Foreign Languages ​​and Literatures.
