Workshops will be held on the Yangming Campus, Teaching Building, Room 303. All workshops will be conducted in English.

Intercultural Communication in the Classroom

  • Instructor: Yann-Ru Ho, Assistant Professor, Institute of Philosophy of Mind and Cognition, NYCU
  • Description: This workshop aims to introduce cross-cultural concepts and basic intercultural conversation tips to help facilitate interaction and communication in the classroom setting.

English Presentation Workshop

  • Instructor: Yann-Ru Ho, Assistant Professor, Institute of Philosophy of Mind and Cognition, NYCU
  • Description: This workshop aims to introduce some basic English presentation skills for academic settings, such as discussing basic methods for English academic presentations and content organization tips. By introducing the above academic English speaking skills, this workshop will help students learn how to present their own research in front of an audience.

Listening to the World through Podcasts

  • Instructor: Kang-yen Chiu, Associate Professor, Institute of Visual Studies, Deputy Director of the Language Learning and Writing Center, NYCU
  • Description: This workshop will lead students into the world of the podcast, and through the 100-minute activity, students will understand the benefits of listening to podcast programs for improving their English listening. In addition, the instructor will also introduce award-winning US and UK programs suitable for students, making podcasts a window for students to enter the English-speaking world.

Personal Statements Workshop

  • Instructor: Jonathon Hricko, Associate Professor, Institute of Philosophy of Mind and Cognition, Director of the Language Learning and Writing Center, NYCU
  • Description: Have you thought about applying to study overseas, perhaps in a summer program or in a master’s or PhD program? If so, you may be asked to submit a personal statement (also known as a statement of purpose) as part of your application. A personal statement explains your research interests and future plans to the admissions committee of the program to which you are applying. Your personal statement will give the members of the admissions committee their first impression of who you are and what you have to offer. First impressions are important, and they can be good or bad. This workshop will introduce some strategies to use to give the committee members a good impression of you, and discuss some things to avoid doing so that you don’t give the committee members a bad impression.

Strategies for Preparing for the IELTS Speaking Test

  • Instructor: Kang-yen Chiu, Associate Professor, Institute of Visual Studies, Deputy Director of the Language Learning and Writing Center, NYCU
  • English description: IELTS (International English Testing System) is an English proficiency test for those who plan to study in or immigrate to English-speaking countries. The IELTS test comprises four parts: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This workshop will focus on the speaking part of the test and will provide strategies to help students prepare for the test.
